Annual Dinner & Silent Auction 2005
The Nova Scotia Nature Trust was honoured to have Nova Scotiaís own, award-wining author and naturalist Harry Thurston as keynote speaker at the Trustís 8th Annual Dinner and Silent Auction held on October 14, 2005 at Casino Nova Scotia Hotel in Halifax.
Well-known for his contributions to Equinox Magazine, Canadian Geographic and National Geographic, Harry is the author of 16 books. His writings include The Nature of Shorebirds, The Sea Among Us and his most recent non-fiction, A Place Between the Tides Ė A Naturalistís Reflections on the Salt Marsh. He shares a thirty acre farmstead in Cumberland County with his wife and daughter.
According to Thurston, it isnít the size of protected space that matters; it is the fact that it is protected. In his address he drew parallels between Easter Island, the Dakhleh Oasis and the hectare-sized salt marsh in his own back yard. The presentation was illustrated with spectacular images from his personal collection.
The evening included musical guests, O Beautiful Gaia, a group of Atlantic Canadian women who sing about their land and water. In 2003 the group released a two disk CD, O Beautiful Gaia Ė Love Songs to the Earth, expressing their joy in their connection to the land where they live. It also according to member Charlotte Keen, mourns the passing of species from our would, mostly do to human activity. Proceeds from the CD will support earth conservation.
Special thanks to our sponsors of this event, auction item donors and all those who attended. With their support over $29,000 was raised to make the evening a success. We look forward to seeing you at the 9th Annual Dinner and Silent Auction.
