Make a Planned Gift -- Legacy Circle

Talk to us about the many ways you can meet your financial goals and maximize your philanthropic giving through estate and gift planning.

If you have already named the Nature Trust as a beneficiary in your will, your RRSP/RRIF or insurance policy, please let us know so we can thank you and invite you to become part of our Legacy Circle.

There are many ways to arrange a planned gift (large or small) and these gifts can provide tax benefits to you or your estate as well as helping the Nature Trust protect valuable habitats in Nova Scotia for future generations.

Please call us to talk further about these options - contact information and some details about these options are below:

  • Make a bequest in your will
  • Donate a life insurance policy
  • Designate a beneficiary on your RRIF or RRSP
  • Give a gift of stock or mutual funds
  • Create a charitable remainder trust
  • Purchase a life annuity
  • Give a gift of land
  • US donor options
  • Our legacy donors leave an incredible gift for all Nova Scotians and the species that live here. Listen to Darlene's story about her legacy gift.

Make a Bequest in your Will

Leave a lasting legacy. You can continue to support the work of the Nature Trust through a provision in your will. Your gift will help forward our mission of protecting Nova Scotia’s outstanding natural legacy through land conservation and will truly create a legacy that will last forever.

A bequest in your will for the Nova Scotia Nature Trust is an easy way to support nature while helping you achieve significant tax savings for your estate, thereby reducing or eliminating your income tax liability in the year of death.

There are several types of bequests you can make and it is important to use our correct legal name when completing your will - you can find sample wording and our legal information here.

Please talk to us as you are drafting your will if you want to restrict the use of your bequest. Similarly, please let us know in advance if you intend to bequeath real estate or other specialized property. Further information is available in the conservation options for landowners booklet (click here to view).

    Donate a Life Insurance Policy

Donating a life insurance policy to the Nature Trust is a way you can make a significant gift, often of greater value than you could make as a cash gift.

You can purchase a new policy, naming the Nature Trust as owner and beneficiary. A relatively small premium payment produces a substantial gift.

You can also transfer ownership of an existing policy you no longer need.

Designate a Beneficiary for your RRIF or RRSP

You can ask your RRSP/RRIF administrator for a Multiple Beneficiary Designation form which allows you to quickly name one or more beneficiaries. You can name the Nova Scotia Nature Trust as well as other beneficiaries. You can allocate different percentages of your RRIF/RRSP to different beneficiaries.

There is no cost to do this and it only takes a few minutes.

Give a Gift of Stock in your Will

You can donate stocks to the Nature Trust during your lifetime or as a gift in your will. If your estate makes a direct donation of appreciated securities, this will provide special tax benefits including avoiding capital gains taxes, while providing your estate with a charitable tax credit.

Sample wording and our correct legal information for bequests in your will is provided by clicking here. Please talk to us as you are drafting your will if you want to restrict the use of your bequest.

    Create a Charitable Remainder Trust

A charitable remainder trust allows you to retain the income from investment assets while committing the capital to the Nature Trust. Your after-tax income can be substantially increased through tax credits for the future gift of capital.

    Purchase a Life Annuity

You can donate a lump-sum gift which the Nature Trust uses to purchase a life annuity. You receive a charitable receipt and guaranteed payments (potentially tax-free) during your life.

    Give a Gift of Land

Landowners play a crucial role in protecting the natural world.

You can donate important conservation lands to the Nature Trust now or in your will. There are special income tax savings available for lands that meet certain ecological criteria (find out more about Ecogifts here).

We also accept gifts of real estate to be sold or traded to secure priority conservation properties.

If you intend to donate a property in your will, including a home or cottage, an alternative is to make the gift now, while retaining the right to use the property as long as you live. Unlike when you make a bequest, you can then enjoy the benefits of your gift today.

Before arranging a gift of land in your will, please contact our office. Prior to receiving your gift, the Nature Trust will need to assess your property to determine if it fits into our priority and program areas.

    US Donor Options

American supporters can leave a Nova Scotian legacy too. Bequests of cash, securities and land can be left to the Nature Trust and provide the same US estate tax benefits as bequests to US charities. Contact us for more information.
